IF I WANT A CUSTOM LAMPSHADE MADE, WHAT IS THE PROCESS?

Amore Lampshades will firstly provide you a cost estimate via email.  If you are then happy to proceed, a date and time for a consultation will be organised.  Most of the time this will be in person, but many consultations are also made via email/phone calls if you are living interstate.

PRICING

A cost estimate for your lampshades will be given first before proceeding further.  This can sometimes be given over the phone but generally will be done via email.  An estimate has the advantage that it gives you an idea of the cost that you will be looking at before you put time aside to visit with me.

When organising an estimate the following are considered: how many hours are required to make the lampshade along with the cost of any materials.  If the pricing surprises you or doesn't fit to your budget please understand that I will be putting my time into making you an individual handmade product which is custom made specific to your requirements. There will be my labour, design time, consultation both in person and by email and the use of quality products: Australian manufactured wire ware and lampshade backing products imported from the UK/EU.  I will work with you to create a quality lampshade that will last you many years and will be the right lampshade you are wanting for your home.  In comparison my labour cost is relative to having something upholstered through an upholsterer or having artwork framed at the picture framers.

Bonded lampshades will be the most cost effective product and there are prices for those in my online shop which can give you an idea of the cost.  Soft, traditional shades require quite a bit of labour and are therefore priced accordingly.  I am always happy to provide you are cost estimate for your custom lampshade needs, simply send me an email with your requirements.

WHAT DETAILS DO I NEED TO PROVIDE TO OBTAIN A COST ESTIMATE?

If you can email the following information through to Amore Lampshades, Laura will get back to you with a cost estimate:

- A picture of your existing lampshade or lamp base.  Or if it's for a ceiling pendant, send me a picture of your room that the ceiling lampshade will be in.

- If you have an existing lampshade provide the following : Bottom diameter x height, or an idea of the size you are looking for.

- A description of what you may like, eg. change of colour, a restoration, adding of trims etc., a Bonded lampshade or a traditional Soft lampshade

WHAT IS A BONDED LAMPSHADE?

Bonded lampshades are a modern construction of lampshades (can also be referred to as hardbacked lampshades), they have a plastic backing (or sometimes card) to the inside of the lampshade and then the fabric/wallpaper is bonded to the outside.

They can vary in shape, Drum, Cylinder, Oval, Empire, Tapered, Rectangular, Square etc. however the side of the lampshades will always be straight (but with varying angles).

These lampshades mostly only require a wire ring top and bottom of the lampshade.  Sometimes a full wire frame may be required depending on shape.

There are different colours of lampshade backing products used, predominantly it will be white - semi-transparent to allow the light to come through the lampshade.  Amore Lampshades also offers the following quality backings for your lampshades:

White - semi transparent;

Soft GOLD (mostly blockout meaning not as much light will pass through the lampshade);

Bright SILVER (mostly blockout meaning not as much light will pass through the lampshade); and

Double sided (where you can bond fabric/wallpaper to both the inside and outside of the lampshade)

Bonded lampshades can simply be finished with a rolled edge.  Amore Lampshades can also offer to finish your lampshades with handmade bias trims (made from the main fabric) and applied trims.  The self bias trims are handmade and applied by Laura and give your lampshade just that bit more detail.

WHAT IS A SOFT LAMPSHADE?

Soft lampshades are the traditional way of making lampshades and you can achieve more shape and detail.  They require a full wire frame.  The frames are wrapped firstly in cotton tape, then the main cover and fabric lining are stretched and hand stitched to the frame, finished with handmade bias trims and applied trims as required.  There are many hours of labour and skill (and at times lots of patience!) involved in these types of lampshades.  It is quite common that most lampshades will take 10-15 hours to complete, I have made pendant lampshades which have taken 30 hours each, it all depends on the design and detail.

Amore Lampshades full wire frames are expertly and professionally manufactured in Australia and are custom made to your requirements.

Amore Lampshades also offers a recovering service (where the frames are still in good strong condition).  Weld repairs and repainting of the frames is also performed inhouse bringing these shades back to looking great again.  Speak to Laura about your restoration projects.  Laura has sensitively made many restorations over the years, taking great care with all aspects of the restoration and all in close consultation with each client.
